With a population of 10.7 million, it is estimated that 12.8% of the population in Tunisia live on less than USD 2 day. Despite recent economic growth, the situation remains fragile due to economic disparity, as south-west mining region in Gafsa remains economically deprived with high unemployment (14.7% in 2009). Human Development Index gives the country a rank of 94th out of 182 countries in 2011. Following the 2011 uprising, Tunisia’s economy witnessed a slowdown with a drop in tourism revenues. However, Tunisia remains more prosperous than its neighbors, with strong trade links with Europe.
The microfinance market potential is estimated between 700,000 and 1.2 million clients, of which near 40% of them are currently served.
